On February 5, the annual summary meeting of the national key R&D program project "Development and Application of Key Technologies for Ammonia-Fueled Internal Combustion Engines Dedicated to Hybrid Heavy-Duty Commercial Vehicles", led by Yuchai, was successfully held.
Expert representatives from Tianjin University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Dongfeng Liuzhou Motor, China Carbon Neutral Technology, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Tsinghua University and other institutions gathered to discuss the development path of ammonia-fueled internal combustion engines.

As a key special project under China's 14th Five-Year Plan, the project aims to develop a new generation of power equipment with distinctive Chinese characteristics and technologies, strengthen cutting-edge research, engineering and applied technological innovation of low-carbon and zero-carbon internal combustion engines, and enhance the core competitiveness and high-end application level of the internal combustion engine industry.
One year after project launch, major breakthroughs have been achieved in a number of core technologies:
- High-efficiency conversion has been realized for catalysts used in ammonia decomposition hydrogen production systems;
- Research and development of high-pressure ammonia injectors has progressed smoothly;
- Design and development of key components for ammonia-fueled internal combustion engines have been completed, with the first dedicated prototype manufactured;
- Positive progress has also been made in the research on ammonia-hydrogen dual-fuel combustion theory and optimal hybrid powertrain configuration, laying a solid foundation for subsequent engineering applications.

The successful convening of this meeting marks that the project has entered a critical research and development stage.Going forward, all research teams will strengthen collaborative verification, strictly control R&D milestones, focus on reliability testing of engineering prototypes, and strive to overcome technical bottlenecks in core components such as high-pressure ammonia injectors and pre-combustion chambers, to ensure on-time project acceptance and demonstration operation.
