Introduction of 2200kW Generator Units at China Telecom Shenzhen IDC Data Center

In July 2022, China Telecom Shenzhen IDC Data Center completed the on-site installation, system commissioning and final acceptance of five 2200kW (16VC) diesel generator sets. Serving as the core emergency standby power infrastructure of the data center, these units are designed to sustain critical load power supply during mains power outages and grid anomalies, supplement power system redundancy, and maintain continuous and stable operation of the data center.

The adopted 16VC model is a proven high-power standby generator widely deployed in large-scale IDC facilities. Each unit delivers a prime power of 2200kW and a standby power of 2420kW. With a robust and mature power configuration, it is well suited for typical data center operating scenarios, including long-term hot standby, instantaneous emergency load pickup and short-duration peak load operation. Its stable load response and adequate power reserve fully satisfy the practical emergency power demands of the data center.
 
Complying with the standby power specifications for Class A data centers, the generator sets are equipped with dedicated intelligent control systems. The systems support automatic startup on mains failure, seamless power transfer, real-time operational monitoring, and automatic fault alert and logging. Featuring stable voltage and frequency output, the units adapt to normalized operational cycles of long-term standby, periodic testing and emergency switching, and fully support unattended operation and maintenance.
 
The five generator sets adopt a parallel standby configuration with unified linkage and grouped switching capabilities, allowing flexible capacity scheduling based on real-time data center load conditions and enhancing the fault tolerance of the emergency power system. In cases of mains outage, line failure or grid fluctuation, the units can rapidly synchronize and take over critical loads, including servers, network devices and precision cooling systems. This guarantees the continuous operation of core services such as data center hosting, cloud computing, and government and enterprise dedicated line services, and mitigates operational risks arising from power interruptions.
 
The commissioning of these generator sets in 2022 effectively expanded the site's high-power emergency power capacity, optimized the power system redundancy architecture, and improved the overall emergency power assurance and disaster resilience. The upgrade meets the power supply standards for enterprise and government computing hosting and cloud service deployment in Shenzhen, providing reliable foundational support for the data center's stable daily operation.
 
Since delivery and commissioning in July 2022, the generator sets have been maintained in strict accordance with IDC operational standards, including regular functional tests, no-load and on-load tests, and quarterly routine maintenance. The units have maintained reliable startup and shutdown performance with stable operating parameters, without major equipment faults or unplanned shutdowns. The equipment remains in sound operational condition and continues to serve as a reliable emergency power guarantee for the data center.
